Fischmarktbrunnen is one of the most famous tourist spots situated in the northern part of Europe. It is placed at Fish Market Square, which is one of the busiest places of Basel since it is a fish market. History of the Fischmarktbrunnen
The fountain was built in the later half of the 14th century. Since then it has been hailed as the most exotic fountain on the earth, which allures thousands of tourists to northern Europe.
Shape of the Fountain
The fountain, which is one of its own kind, is polygonal in shape which makes it unique. It is decorated with a centerpiece, which is Gothic in nature. This centerpiece was inspired from the original one which is now a part of the Historical Museum. There are four spouts above which stands angels. The angels hold in their hands musical instruments and weapons which are brilliant pieces of art work and give the fountain a unique look.
The huge sculptures symbolize the great personalities like Mary, John and Peter. There are various others figures which are representative of other saints. These figures are smaller than the previous three figures. Since it is situated at a busy place, the heavy traffic is a bit irritating for people who visit the place to enjoy the vision. Therefore, it is suggested that one can visit the place on a Sunday afternoon when the traffic is not that heavy.
