Vienna airport is located at a distance of 18 kilometers from the main city. This airport is not only the biggest but also the busiest airport in Austria. It is also known as Schwechat Airport because of its proximity to the town of Schwechat. Vienna Airport can handle wide body aircrafts like the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340.
In 1938, Vienna airport was built as a military airbase. In 1945, Britain took over the airport. Initially there was just 1 runway but in 1972 a second runway was built. At present, there are three terminals in Vienna Airport in Austria. The construction of SKYLINK, a new terminal capable of handling bigger aircrafts and large volumes of passengers, started in 2006. There can be a further enlargement of the SKYLINK terminal, according to Masterplan 2015, if the passenger growth continues. Masterplan 2015 states that there should be a third runway due to the high aviation rates. The construction of this runway will start from 2009. There is also a proposal to enlarge the underground railway station. This station will be connected to Bratislava. The City Airport Train that connects the airport to the city center in 16 minutes will have a new railway station.
