Graz Airport is also known as Thalerhof Airport. The geographical location of the airport is 46°59´37" north latitude and 15°26´24" east longitude. The airport is located at an altitude of 337 meters. One of the highlights of Graz Airport is the landing of the Concord in the year 1981. The airport can be easily accessed by various modes of transport. The Flughafen Graz-Feldkirchen railway station is just 4 minutes walking distance from the airport.
The construction of Graz Airport in Austria started in 1913. A grass runway and hangars were also built. The first flight from this airport took off in 1914. The first domestic passenger flight of Austria was from Vienna to Klagenfurt, via the Graz Airport. Due to the increase in passenger volumes, a terminal building was built in 1937.
Austria was forbidden to possess aviation fleets for both military and civil, after the Second World War. After the reopening of Austria's airspace in 1951, a 1500-meter concrete runway was built in the Graz Airport. Subsequently in 1962, the length of the runway was increased to 2000 meter. In 1966, international scheduled flights began. These flights had a connection to Frankfurt. The runway was further extended to 2500 meters in 1969. In the early 1990s, a new airport building was built to handle up to 7,50,000 passengers annually. In 1998, the runway was again extended to 3000 meter. The volume of passengers touched 9,00,000 in early 21st century. This necessitated the extension of the terminal building. In 2003, the existing terminal had the final extension. A second terminal building was constructed in 2005.
