Coach Bruce Arena's team has 12 members from the team of 2002 World Cup. Experienced Brian McBride and Landon Donovan and the young Eddie Johnson are assets to the team.
USA Soccer Team played brilliantly in the qualifying matches. They qualified for the finals with three matches still to play in the final rounds of North, Central American and Caribbean qualifying zone. Though the team were defeated by fellow qualifiers Costa Rica, they finished top of the Group. USAUSA Soccer Team suffered only one defeat in their opening six final round matches. At this juncture US needed a home win against archrivals Mexico in the match scheduled on 3 September 2005. Steve Ralston and Beasley scored goals and led their team to victory in Crew Stadium. The fans celebrated their teams victory in style. The US team also secured a 2-0 win over Panama in Boston. In this match Taylor Twellman and Kyle Martino hit their first international goals.
Coach Arena said that all matches were difficult but his team's experience helped them in capitalizing over all situations.
