Portugal defeated Mexico 2-1 in a Group D match in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday. With this victory Portugal is placed at the top of Group D. Maniche and Simao Sabrosa scored the two goals of the match.

As far as Mexico is concerned it has reached the last 16. Portugal had qualified for the Group D matches before this match itself. Mexico took a 2-0 lead in the first 24 minutes. It rested five players on yellow cards. Luiz Perez of Mexico was shown a yellow card in the 61st minute.

Mexico missed on a chance to score a goal in the 57th minute. Omar Bravo blasted a penalty into the crowd. Omar Bravo could not hit the penalty into the goal. Accidentally, he blasted it into the crowd. Maniche scored the first goal of the match in the sixth minute. In the 24th minute, Simao Sarbosa hit a penalty shot into the goal. Mexico bounced back into the game when it scored its only goal in the match in the 29th minute. Fonseca scored the goal. Fonseca got another opportunity before interval but he could not materialize it into a goal. Mexico missed another opportunity in the 56th minute. Throughout the match, Mexico could not demonstrate its finishing prowess.
