Mexico gave its fans a reason to celebrate by defeating Iran in style in the Group D opener. Mexico scored two goals in the last 15 minutes for a 3-1 victory. Mexico goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez went home on Thursday to bury his father. He joined his teammates on Saturday night.

In the 28th minute Omar Bravo slotted a pass from Guillermo Franco and scored a goal. Bravo hit the second goal of the match in the 76th minute placing Mexico at 2-1. In the first half the Mexicans did not have much grip over the ball. Everything stabilized in the second half and the Mexicans were able to secure a victory.

From the Iranian side defender Yahya Golmohammedi scored the only goal in the 36th minute. The game saw a total of 45 fouls. 26 fouls were scored on Mexico. For Mexico, it was the second victory in a World Cup game in Europe. The previous win was over South Korea in a 1998 opener.
