It was a dramatic final on Sunday. Italy won the World Cup final on penalties. Italy defeated France 5-3 on Sunday after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes. The winning penalty of the match came from Fabio Grosso. The second spot kick by David Trezeguet did not materialize into a goal. This was the first penalty shootout in the final since the 1994 World Cup. For Italy, it was the fourth World Cup crown. The Italian team had lifted the crown in 1934, 1938 and 1982. Also this was the first time that Italy won a penalty shoot-out in four attempts.
The last few minutes of the match were dramatic, when Zidane was sent off for a moment in the 109th minute. Zidane hit a headbutt into the chest of Marco Materazzi. Referee Elizondo missed the incident but Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon protested furiously. After a lengthy conversation, Zidane was shown a red card.
