Australia 1-0 in the
Knock-out stage match on Monday at Kaiserslautern. The only goal of the match was scored by substitute Francesco Totti in the fifth minute of stoppage time. With this win, Italy has secured a place in the World Cup quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, Italy might play Switzerland or Ukraine. Australia has been knocked-out of the tournament.
Italy had to play with 10 players as Marco Materazzi was sent off shortly after half-time in the 50th minute. Italy missed on an opportunity to score in the third minute, when Alessandro Del Piero's left-wing cross hit the side-netting.
Australia got a chance to score in the 24th minute, when Marco Bresciano free-kick could not be materialised into a goal. Del Piero was replaced by Totti in the 75th minute.
