Portugal defeated Angola in Group D opener. Angola put forth a good performance at their first World Cup appearance. Pedro Pauleta scored the only goal of the match in the fourth minute. This was his 47th goal for Portugal. Portugal could have put forth a better performance considering the fact that Angola is an underdog. In the second half, the Angolans played better. Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari felt that the team should have scored three or four more goals.
