Stuttgart was founded in 950 AD by Duke Luidolf of Swabia. With the rise of industrialization Stuttgart emerged as the largest urban development in Germany.

Stuttgart earned its reputation as an international sports city by hosting the 1986 European Track and Field Championships. Stuttgart maintained its reputation for excellent organization, and the courtesy and enthusiasm of the spectators prompted the International Olympic Committee, IOC, to award the Olympic Cup to the capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg.


Some more examples of the sporting highlights in the Swabian Metropolis are matches of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and of EURO '88, and the 1993 IAAF Track and Field World Championships.

The sporting symbol of Stuttgart is the football Bundesliga club VfB, playing different home matches at Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion for many years. Till date 19 international matches have been played here.
