During Charlemagne's reign, Hamburg was founded in 811 and today, Hamburg is one of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany and an important venue for FIFA World Cup 2006. Hamburg's seaport is one of the world's seven largest container ports and the largest seaport (in surface area) in Europe. Hamburg lies on the rivers Elbe and Alster and is one of Germany's major media centers. Nearly three-fourth of the highest-circulation German magazines are published in Hamburg.


Hamburg is also renowned as Germany's foremost centre for musical productions, especially for musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber such as "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera".

The reconstruction of the Hamburg Stadium began in 1998 and the new stadium was inaugurated in Sept 2000.

Four 'group stage' matches and a quarter-final match of the forthcoming 2006 FIFA World Cup finals shall be played here

The Hamburg FIFA World Cup Stadium was inaugurated on 2 September, 2000 with a match between Germany and Greece. The arena has been awarded five stars by the UEFA.

A total of 97 million Euros was invested into this new stadium. The work on the ground started in March 1998. The old Volksparkstadion was demolished in four stages. As part of the renovation plan, the pitch was rotated, the stands were rebuilt, and function rooms and VIP and media areas were completely remodeled. All the spectator areas are now covered. Electronic access controls featuring machine-readable microchip technology were also introduced.

The stadium is home to Bundesliga club Haburger SV. This club is the only club ever-present in the German top-flight throughout the Bundesliga'a 42-year history.

This FIFA season, the Hamburg Stadium is going to be jam-packed with fans from across the globe.
