Cologne is one of the most ancient cities of Germany. The name of this city goes back to the Romans who gave the "Colonia" the status of a town in 50 AD. By the Middle Ages the city had started to prosper and by the 15th century it became the most populous city in the German speaking world. |
In the 19th century city again regained its medieval pride. All this lead to a major growth and prosperity for the city and it continues till date. Cologne with its rich and varied heritage is renowned as a city of arts and business communications.

The cathedral city is headquarters to the German Sports College, the Trainer Academy, the German Sports and Olympic Museum, the Football Instructor's School and the Federal Institute for Sports Science.
Nearly 30 Bundesliga teams come from Cologne. The main football representatives are currently the traditional clubs 1. FC Köln and Fortuna Köln. Today Cologne is the home to 860 sports clubs with over 195,000 members.
