The Berlin Olympic Stadium has hosted numerous events. On 9 July, 2006 it will be hosting the much-awaited 2006 FIFA World Cup Final. An audience of around a billion is going to watch the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final live on TV. This ground has witnessed many sparkling performances by many players. During the 1936 Olympic Games, American sprinter Jesse Owens won four
gold medals. The stadium has been host to German Cup Finals since 1985.
The stadium has been reconstructed at a cost of 242 million Euro. The reconstruction began in the summer of 2000. A gala opening ceremony was organized on 31 July 2004, where world-renowned star PINK participated. After the inauguration, a number of matches were organized in the stadium. The gross seating capacity of the stadium is 74,220 and the total seating capacity is 66,021.
Architect Werner March originally designed the stadium. The stadium was built in 1934-36 for around 42 million Reichsmark. This state-of-the-art stadium incorporates VIP and Sky executive boxes, a Hertha BSC megastore, Business Seats etc. The stadium also provides underground warm-up facility (including a 110 m running track and a long-jump pit). There is also an underground car park. The stadium has additional features such as 5,000 dimmable fluorescent lamps, dazzle-free floodlighting and an ultra-modern PA system.
The stadium was reconstructed to optimize its functionality and spectator comfort. Before renovation only 27,000 seats were covered but now the number of covered seats has been increased to 74,200 seats.
Berlin Olympic Stadium's lightweight cantilever construction is borne by an intricate web of 20 beam supports ranging over the gallery, and 132 steel pillars. This stadium is going to give the spectators an experience of their lifetime.
