FIFA World Cup Groups

The 32 qualified teams were divided into 8 groups of 4 teams.
In accordance with a decision taken by the Organising Committee for the Football World Cup, Germany has been seeded as team A1. Brazil, as the reigning world champion, is seeded as team F1 in order to guarantee that these two teams play their group matches in the stadiums with the biggest spectator capacities(i.e. in Berlin, Munich and Dortmund).

The six highest-ranked teams according to the FIFA World Cup final competitions of 2002 and 1998 (ratio: 2:1) and the FIFA World Ranking in the years 2005, 2004 and 2003 (ratio:1:1:1) were placed into pot 1 and drawn into position 1 of each group.

The 24 remaining teams were distributed into pots 2, 3 and 4 in such a way that guaranteed the best possible geographical distribution in the eight groups.

Draw procedure

According to FIFA's established principle,
teams from the same continental zone shall not be placed in the same group (A-H) as far as possible.
The only exception to this rule is that a maximum of two teams from the European zone may be drawn into the same group, due to the higher number of teams (fourteen), from Europe.

Drawing teams from pot 1
1. In accordance with a decision taken by the FIFA Organising Committee, Brazil has been seeded as team F1 and Germany as team A1. The other six highest-ranked teams will be drawn from pot 1 and placed in the top position of groups B, C, D, E, G and H, from left to right.

Drawing teams from pots 2, 3, 4 and from the special pot:
2. As the teams are drawn from pots 2, 3 and 4, they are placed in groups A-H from left to right, except in the cases mentioned below.

3. After each team is drawn from pots 2, 3 and 4, a number will be drawn (A2, A3, A4 to H2, H3, H4) out of pots A to H to determine the team's position in the group.

4. Balls are drawn out of pot 2 with the African teams, the South American teams and Australia, and placed in the groups from left to right according to the principles described above. In the following cases, the principle is modified:
  • If a team is drawn from Africa or if Australia is drawn, it is automatically placed in the first group from the left with a South American team until the groups with the South American teams are covered with African teams or Australia. (only as long as South American teams still left to be drawn)
  • If a South American team is drawn into a group with another South American team, it is automatically placed in the next group to the right.  This is to avoid two teams from South America being placed in the same group.

5. The 8 balls are then drawn from pot 3 with the European teams and placed according to the principles described above, i.e. from left to right and with a position from pots A-H to determine the position in the group.

6. First, Serbia and Montenegro in the white ball is drawn from the special pot. Then from the same pot a black ball (non-European teams in top positions: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico) is drawn to determine the group for Serbia and Montenegro. The position within that group is drawn from the respective pot A-H.

7. Balls are then drawn from pot 4 with the Asian and the North, Central American and Caribbean teams and placed in the groups from left to right according to the principles described above. However, in the following cases, the principle is modified:
  • The first Asian team drawn is automatically placed in the group with Mexico. (only as long as there are teams left to be drawn from North, Central American and Caribbean.)
  • If a North, Central American and Caribbean team is drawn into the group with Mexico, it is automatically placed in the next group to the right.  This is to avoid two teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean being placed in the same group.
