The XVIII Football World Cup hosted by Germany had its final match on 09th July 2006 at Berlin Olympic Stadium between France and Italy.

The reigning champion Brazil lost to France in the quarterfinals and the hot favourite Argentina also lost in the quarterfinal to the host Germany. Germany lost in the semifinal to Italy, who defeated France in Penalties in final.
Germany defeated the other losing semifinalist Portugal and took the third place.

On 12thJuly 2006, FIFA released the world ranking of all the 204 teams.
