Ahn made his international debut on 23 April 1997. He earned a place on the reserve list for France 98. He scored his first goal in a Korea Cup match against Mexico in June 1999. Ahn played brilliantly in the matches of the 2002 World Cup.
Ahn began his career at Busan-Dewoo Royals in 1998. The trio comprising of Lee Dong Guk, Goh Jong Su and Jung Hwan Ahn played brilliantly for K-league. He was roped in by Serie A side Perugia in July 2000. He became the first Korean ever to play in Italy. At the end of the first season in Italy, Ahn had scored four goals in 15 appearances.
He was enrolled by Shimizu S Pulse of Japan's J-League in September 2002. He scored 16 goals in the 2003 campaign. French club Metz roped him in July 2005. Then, Bundesliga side MSV Duisburg enrolled him. South Korean fans are hopeful he'll repeat the heroics of 2002 World Cup.
