In 2004 he was listed among the "greatest living footballers" named by Pelé, the world-known Brazilian striker. The occasion marked the 100th anniversary of FIFA.
Roberto was the mainstay of the Italian team during World Cup 1994. He scored five goals- two in the Round of 16 against Nigeria, one in the quarterfinals against Spain, and two against Bulgaria in the semifinals. Unluckily, Baggio missed out their last penalty in the Finals against Brazil ending Italy's hopes to win the championship. Although, even if he had scored, Brazil would still have had a penalty left to win the Cup.
Baggio retired from the game in 2004. He ended his career with 205 goals in Serie A, fifth all time high following Silvio Piola, Gunnar Nordahl, Giuseppe Meazza and José Altafini. Roberto scored 27 goals and 56 caps for the Italian national team. 9 of these goals came in three World cups.
He remains a beloved football figure in his country and around the world.
