Maldini has totaled the highest number of caps for Italy. However, he could never win any international trophy despite reaching the Final of the World Cup 1994 and the European Championship 2000. Maldini also played in World Cup 1990, World Cup 1998, Euro 88, and Euro 96. After the 2002 World Cup, he announced his retirement from the Italian national team, concluding his career with 7 goals and 126 caps. Maldini's father, Cesare, also was the captain of A.C. Milan in the 1960s. He raised the European Cup in 1963.
